Head-on collision of Bangladesh trains kills 16, injures 40

DHAKA (Reuters) - Rescuers in Bangladesh were struggling on Tuesday to pull passengers from mangled wreckage after a head-on collision of two trains killed at least 16 people and injured more than 40, officials said.

A train heading for the southern port city of Chittagong and one bound for Dhaka collided at around 3 a.m. (2100 GMT) in Brahmanbaria, about 100 km (60 miles) east of the capital, crumpling three compartments of the southbound train.

“When I came out of the train, I saw dead bodies without heads, without legs, without hands,” Mohammad Moslem, 50, who was among the passengers, many of them asleep at the time, told Reuters by telephone.

“We were so close to death, but Allah saved us,” added Moslem, who was riding on the train headed for the port.

“Suddenly there was a big bang. I saw people were screaming,” one of those on the train going to Dhaka said in television footage.

孟加拉12日發生火車相撞意外，兩列火車在各自行駛時迎頭相撞，目前已知至少15人死、58人受傷，孟加拉鐵道部官員指事故可能是火車訊號出錯所致。

事發首都達卡東部以東約100公里的布拉曼巴里亞，一列前往南部港口城市吉大港的火車與前往達卡的火車在凌晨3時迎頭相撞，當地警察局長拉赫曼（Anisur Ra​​hman）表示，事件至少造成15死，58人受傷。

由於事發當時為深夜時分，很多乘客多在睡覺，對衝擊沒有防備，不少乘客摸黑在火車殘骸中爬出待救。

據現場消息指，當中有3節車廂被撞出軌。

地區官員表示，死亡人數可能持續上升，「醫院已收了40多名傷者，一些人在生死邊緣」，倖存乘客則指事發聽到巨大的撞擊聲音，「大家都在尖叫」。

目前尚不清楚為何兩列火車會走在同一路軌上，當局已下令進行調查，並停止達卡的火車服務。

鐵道部官員表示，事件起因很可能是訊號出現錯誤導致意外發生，印度媒體《news18》則表示，火車事故在孟加拉國很常見，通常是因為訊號問題或其他設施殘舊所造成。
