Karl Shiels was an Irish actor. He was born in Dublin and studied drama at the Gaiety School Of Acting in the city. He was best known for playing Robbie Quinn in Fair City, a role he took up in 2014.
Shiels also starred in a number of television shows, playing a character called Ryan in an episode of Peaky Blinders back in 2013 as well as playing Declan in martial arts drama, Into the Badlands. His film work includes role sin movies Batman Begins, Veronica Guerin, Intermission, The Clinic, and Capital Letters.

Shiels was an electrician before moving into acting. He switched careers in the early 90s when he studied at the Gaiety School of Acting. He won a Best Actor Award at the Dublin Theatre Festival for his role in Comedians in 1999. He was nominated for a Best Actor Award at the Irish Times Theatre Awards in 2011 and for 2010 Stage Awards.
Shiels was the artistic director and a founding member of the Theatre Upstairs. He was awarded the Judge’s Special Prize at The Irish Times Theatre Awards in 2013 for his work with the theatre and for the promotion of new Irish stage talent.

Karl died at the age of 47. His death was confirmed in a statement by his agent Lisa Richards.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of our client and friend Karl Shiels, yesterday. Karl was a uniquely talented individual, simultaneously intense, light hearted, funny, sharp witted, outspoken and intensely powerful as an actor, director and artistic director of the Theatre Upstairs – where he was such a support and mentor for young writers, actors and directors – and of his own company Semper Fi before that.”
“Our hearts are broken but today our thoughts are with his partner Laura and his family, his children and their mother Dearbhla and his many close friends among whom we count ourselves lucky to have been for so many years.”
Following the news of Karl Shiels’ death, celebrities paid tribute to Shiels on social media.
Fair City executive producer Brigie De Courcy said: “We are absolutely devastated and he will be so greatly missed by the entire cast and crew. Our thoughts are with his family at this incredibly sad time.”
His Fair City co-star Eric Lalor wrote on Twitter: “Absolutely stunned and heartbroken to hear of the death of Karl Shiels. A hugely gifted actor and a really great friend, I will miss him so much. Thinking of his gorgeous family, may he Rest In Peace.”
