A fire has destroyed much of a historic village in western Norway, burning down many of its famed 18th- and 19th-century wooden houses and forcing the evacuation of local residents.
The fire in the riverside village of Laerdalsoyri, some 200 miles northwest of Oslo, began in a house on Saturday evening and was still not under control by midday on Sunday, fanned by strong winds.
"There are still 25 smouldering fires in the town and up the hillside," said Jan Geir Solheim, mayor of the town. He said they were using helicopters to extinguish the fires on the hills.
"It's going to take days until we get the power network fixed, and the phone network and sewers are struggling."
The local firefighters were being assisted by colleagues from Bergen, he said.
