JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Rescuers have safely evacuated 187 passengers of KM Mutara Sentosa 1 ferry which caught fire, Friday, during its trip from Surabaya, East Java to Balipapan, East Kalimantan, the Ministry of Transportation have confirmed.
Sea Transportation Director General A Tonny Budiono revealed the 187 passengers, including the ship crew members, had been evacuated and those who sustained injuries had been taken to the Masalembo Public Health Care Center. "Those who did not suffer any injuries are now sheltered at Masalembo Passenger Terminal," the director general said.
Sumenep Resort Police of East Java, remarked, Saturday, five passengers were killed when the ferry caught fire in the Masalembo waters."One of the five fatalities has not yet been identified," Sumenep Police Spokesman Adjunct Commissioner Suwardi affirmed in Sumenep.
On Friday afternoon, about 4 p.m, KM Mutiara Sentosa 1 which was carrying hundreds of passengers caught fire in Java Sea, some 17 nautical miles from Masalembo Island.
