On September 16, 2011, at the Reno Air Races, a North American P-51D Mustang piloted by James K. "Jimmy" Leeward crashed into spectators, killing nine people including the pilot, and injuring at least 69.^[3] Leeward, the 74-year-old pilot of the Mustang called The Galloping Ghost, was in fourth place and had just rounded the last pylon when the airplane abruptly pitched up, rolled inverted, then pitched down.^[4] The aircraft hit the tarmac in the front of the grandstands in an area containing box seating.

Seven people, including the pilot, died on the tarmac after the crash,^[5] with two dying later in the hospital, bringing the total deaths to nine.^[6] The weekend's remaining races at the Reno Air Races were cancelled. At 9 a.m. the morning after the crash, Renown Health hospitals reported that of the 35 patients treated, in addition to the two that had died, six were in critical condition, two in serious, five fair, one good, and that 19 had been discharged.^[7]
